September is Early Childhood Literacy Month, and this year’s theme is “Cultivating a Love for Reading.” At The Tot Space, we believe books are more than just stories, they’re doorways to imagination, connection, and lifelong learning. From the cozy moments of bedtime reading to playful storytelling during the day, every page turned plants a seed for growth.

Why Reading Aloud Daily Is Transformative

Reading aloud is one of the simplest yet most powerful things families can do. Just 15 minutes a day can:

  • Expand your child’s vocabulary and comprehension.

  • Strengthen listening skills and attention span.

  • Build emotional connections between children and caregivers.

  • Spark curiosity and imagination in a safe, comforting way.

When children hear stories often, they don’t just learn new words, they begin to feel language, tone, and rhythm, laying the foundation for confident communication.

Creating Cozy Reading Spaces at Home

Children are more likely to fall in love with books when reading feels inviting and special. You don’t need a big library to make it happen, just a few thoughtful touches:

  • A soft corner with pillows, a small blanket, or beanbag chair.

  • A basket of rotating books at eye level for your child to grab independently.

  • Warm lighting with a small lamp or string lights to make the space magical.

Pro Tip: Keep a few age-appropriate books in the car, by the bed, or even in the kitchen. Having stories within reach makes it easy to squeeze in a reading moment anytime.

Using Play to Reinforce Storytelling

Books don’t have to stay on the page, they can come alive through play. Try:

  • Acting out stories with stuffed animals or puppets.

  • Creating “story baskets” with props that match your child’s favorite book (e.g., a toy train for The Little Engine That Could).

  • Making up alternate endings together to stretch creativity.

  • Drawing pictures of characters or settings to link vocabulary with visual learning.

Play helps children connect stories to their world, building memory, understanding, and confidence in self-expression.

Partnering With Local Libraries and Community Events

September is also Library Card Sign-Up Month , the perfect time to introduce your child to the magic of the library. Many local branches host:

  • Storytime sessions for toddlers and preschoolers.

  • Parent-child workshops on early literacy skills.

  • Special events featuring authors, illustrators, and performers.

Libraries aren’t just about borrowing books, they’re vibrant community hubs where children can meet peers, explore new interests, and feel at home in the world of reading.

Building the Village Together

At The Tot Space, we know literacy blossoms in community. Whether it’s through daily read-alouds, creative play, or trips to the library, every little effort makes a difference. Together, we can cultivate a love for reading that lasts a lifetime.

So this September, grab a book, find a cozy corner, and let the stories begin.
